Windsurfing Equipment
The basic windsurfing equipment required to effectively windsurf is a surfboard with a hole in the middle and fins in the back or a large rudder on the bottom. The mast attaches to the hole in the middle of the board. The sail is attached to the mast and provides the forward momentum.
On the mast and around the sail is the boom which is the piece of windsurfing equipment that the rider holds onto and uses to propel the board. A harness can be attached to the boom to take force off the arms and better apply it to the body movements of the surfer. The surfer uses a combination of the sail and the board to turn and perform maneuvers.
Other useful windsurfing equipment includes wetsuits, sunglasses that won’t fall off, and foot straps. The foot straps are very useful in applying pressure to the board when turning and are located on both sides for a total of three foot straps so the rider can move from one side of the board to the other, a vital skill of windsurfing.
